Bio

My name is Cherylann Dorsey. I am a corporate communications professional and a 38 year old single mom of two: a 7 year old girl and 9 year old boy. While this itself can be a challenge I still am a relentless pursuer of personal growth and am the marketing chairperson for Habitat for Humanity's ReStore locally; and train for triathlons. The key: babysitters and training at times that doesn't interfere with time with kids. I completed 3 marathons in 02-03 with the last resulting in a 5 day hospital stay from a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis and dehydration. My digestive system shut down by mile 8 and by mile 18 when I was walking my stomach was distended as my body wasn't absorbing any liquids or gels. I continued at one point crawling at mile 23 from which point took me an hour to get to the finish. My only thought was not medical but to get to the finish line so I could get to my bed sooner. Later that evening I had to go to the ER. I didn't run for two years though t he doctors said when I walked out of the hospital I'd be as good as the morning of the marathon. Two years later I started karate subsequently blowing out my ACL, and started triathlons to minimize impact and distance. I only just had ACL reconstructed last year. Earlier this year few months into training I 'tried' a karate class and blew my other ACL however am delaying surgery until the Fall to complete the rest of my triathlon season which is going well. I completed one in May, have one in 2 weeks, 2 in July and 1 in September. I swim 2x week with Masters swim, bike 2xweek, and run 2 xweek but low mileage. I'm just happy to be out there. The ACL injury has slowed me down but hasn't stopped me and this is my typical outlook on life in general. I would like more people to hear about stories like Shad's to appreciate and be able to overcome or at least muddle through their current challenges to come out on the other side. I'd be honored to represent Team Ireland as a person that has and will probably withstand more challenges to come.

3 Down 2 To Go

Well delaying knee surgery has paid off (tore ACL in April, planning surgery in September) and I continue to be excited as every tri approaches and rewarded when it’s over. My first tri of the season in May was my benchmark from which to improve on. I did two tri’s in ‘05 and ‘06, one on the spur of the moment on a mountain bike and the second with a borrowed Schwinn and not much more training (3 days to couple weeks).  With new Bianchi in tow and few weeks with masters swim, I went into the first tri in May with no real goals. I completed the .45 mi swim/23.5 mi bike/4 m run in 2:14.  Two weeks ago I completed another sprint tri of .5 mi swim/16 mi bike/3.1 mi run in 1:43 and this past weekend July 13 same distance at 1:41 with a proud improvement on the run from 8:16 to7:37 pace. My training has consisted of about 5-6 days training, each sport twice a week.

My knee continues to be strong, not so sore anymore, and I temper the running to minimize risk of further injury. I’ll do my first Olympic distance at NJ State in two weeks, and my last sprint tri for the season on Sept 14 at Danskin NY Metro.  Everyone keep up the training, play it safe on bike downhill /sharp curves and keep your head and chin up 100 yards out from finish line on the run!
